March 15, 2002 Graduation Ceremony

Principal's Speech
Now is the last moment for leaving school. I miss you from now on.
Where your look seemed so worried about at the time of entrance ceremony had gone away?
I suppose that you felt anxious more than expectation.
But now, I can look your confidence "I did it."on your face. It proves you can do when you try.

You can see your contry from Japan and compare with two contries and talk about your opinion in Japanese.
You admirably studied so hard.

I told you to follow three things when you entered this school.
Please remind those threes.
"To study hard, To make many friends from various contries, to understand about Japan". You listened to this from senior interpreter at the entrance ceremony.
Nobody interprets my speech today because you can understand well without an interpreter.
Today's my speech continues from that privious speech.

You had been studying Japanese here last year, 2001.
I cannot forget the year 2001. Terrorism occured in the United States, and a lot of life was taken away as a result of the attack to Afghanistan by U.S. I wonder what impression these incidents had on you. One of my American student was involved in this incident.
Moreover, my mother died last year.
I felt "death" close to me in last year, 2001. And, I thought about "the importance to convey something to someone" as well as "death".

I consider the Japanese communication way is "getting one imagine what I want to say". This is because of regard "not to hurt one's feeling". I want you to study not only Japanese language but also Japanese way of thinking.

Japanese don't like "striking power to power" way like English.
I'm sure terrorism should be hateful but I dipressed what U.S. did afterwards. There is a communication insisting "I'm right." in the world. On the other hand, there is a way for making others think. That's Japanese communication.
You have been learning such Japanese communication as "putting myself in other one's place".

The origin of this Japanese communication way is that "we believe natural power much stronger than human beings. Human beings do "life" and "death" over again in huge passage of time.
That cannot be changed by our power. You studied intransitive verbs, didn't you? This is the background of intransitive verbs.
I'm thinking we have to convey "what I think important" to next generation in that huge passage of time.

Then, what is "what I think important"? One of this is "to do something very hard".
"For what?"
"For other person", of course. I don't think there is a meaning to do something very hard for myself. It's important to do something very hard for other person, to find something to do for other person.
One thing is doing very hard, the other thing is making use of your ability and finding what you can do for others. You've already proved that you can do. What you should do next is becoming aware of your ability.

I told you "the importance of thinking much of friends".
For thinking much of friends, firstly, you need to find your characteristic. Next, use it for others after you confirm your ability. That's the content "to convey to next generation" in the passage of time.

Think from a different point of view.
What your parents tries to convey to you?
Your parents would say "Do hard and find something." Don't forget that mind. Don't forget giving your thanks to your parents. "Thank you for your 〜." is other general rule of Japanese communication.
And, be doing well. Be careful not to get a sick.

"To know about Japan" which I told you at entrance ceremony is still left. So, you cannnot graduate Aoyama Shool actually.

But, I'll let you graduate for the time being.
Now, I congratulate you because you studied so hard.

You can come back here anytime.
We'll be waiting you.

At last, I thank to teachers brought up foreign students and people supported our school. Thank you very much.

Address in reply
March has come and many school hold graduate ceremony in Japan. Graduate ceremony makes us lonely only because the sound. I thank to principal and all teachers who earnestly taght us Japanese.
I'm sotty to part from friends, younger students and teachers. But, this is not a part to all. It also means an encounter with all. I'll never forget every exprience in this one year and half during the life in Japan such as excursion, speech contest, new year party and table tennis tournament.
I decided to enter a technical school to study much more in much larger world. I'm so happy as if I would have a dream.
Today, this graduate ceremony is important for us. Past memory flew in my mind like a river. I remember beautiful memories spending in warm and orange light. It's not easy to study apart from my own home and country. But, challenge or thank to this moment are another study.
I really enjoyed every day at Aoyama School of Japanese.
Do our best without forgetting the first resolution, and we can do everything.
